Gospel Roots

Usher Raymond IV is born to Usher Raymond III and Jonetta Patton. At 9, he begins singing in the choir at St. Elmo Missionary Baptist Church in Chattanooga, Tenn. Usher tells the Washington Post in 1998 that singing in the church was "like mental grooming in early ages...Like any other normal child, I had a lot of dreams."

Discovered on Star Search

With his mother, stepfather and younger brother, Usher, 12, relocates to Atlanta, Ga., where Jonetta hopes to get the aspiring singer more exposure. He enters TV's talent showcase Star Search, where he wins Best Teen Male Vocalist for his rendition of Boyz II Men's "End Of The Road." "I was a competitor for four months. I was doing good," Usher says. "No one could beat me." The following year, he meets producer L.A. Reid, who signs him to LaFace Records. "Usher represents the next generation of R&B soul," Reid tells Billboard.

A Bad Boy Debut

Usher, 15, moves to New York to work with up-and-coming producer Sean ''Diddy'' Combs, who has a makeover in mind for his protégé. Usher's self-titled debut album sells 500,000 copies, but is heavily criticized for its sexual content. "It was the wrong direction," Usher tells PEOPLE. "That whole bad-boy thing, me frowning for the camera – that wasn't me."

Usher (pictured with costar Brandy) makes his acting debut with a recurring role on the singer-actress' hit UPN series Moesha. After playing Brandy's boyfriend, he nabs another role on the CBS soap The Bold and the Beautiful. "I've found a new love," Usher tells PEOPLE. "My acting is making me want to leave my singing."

Sophomore Success

Usher releases his second disc, My Way, co-writing six of the nine tracks. It sells 8 million copies with such singles as "You Make Me Wanna..." "Nice & Slow" and "My Way". "The album is done my way in every aspect," Usher tells the Kansas City Star. "I did a lot more on this album because I'm older and have more of an opinion."

Usher's Movie Debut

Usher makes his film debut in the Robert Rodriguez's sci-fi thriller The Faculty. "He has a natural style," Rodriguez tells PEOPLE. "I was impressed." The following year, he appears as a DJ (left) in the teen hit She's All That and stars with Rosario Dawson and Vanessa Williams in the hostage drama Light It Up.

Becoming a Grammy Winner

Usher, 22, releases his third album, 8701. "The album is really about my evolution as an artist, as a writer, as a producer and as a man," Usher tells USA Today. "I learned how music works dealing with Jermaine Dupri, and I learned how image works dealing with Puff Daddy." It sells 8 million copies with hits like "U Remind Me," "U Got It Bad," and "U Don't Have to Call." Usher wins two Grammys: Best Male R&B Vocal Performance for "U Remind Me" and the same award the following year for "U Don't Have to Call."

Mighty Chilli Breakup

After shooting the music video for his single, "U Got It Bad," Usher begins dating former TLC member Rozonda "Chilli" Thomas, more than seven years his senior. He tells PEOPLE that Chilli was his "dream girl," but a few weeks after their split in January 2004, she tells PEOPLE, Usher told her he had strayed during their relationship. "He portrayed himself as faithful, and he wasn't," she says. "I could never be with him ever again." Usher tells Jet, "It was something as a man I admitted to. As a man, I had to sit down and have a real-talk conversation with my woman and I talked to her."

Usher's Confessions

Usher releases Confessions, which sells nearly 1.1 million copies in its first week before selling more than 15 million copies worldwide. On the strength of such hits as "Confessions," "Burn," and "Yeah!" Usher receives eight Grammy nominations, winning two awards for Best Contemporary R&B Album and Best Rap/Sung Collaboration for "Yeah!" "My feeling has always been that Confessions would be a landmark album for me," he tells Ebony. "I knew this album was going to be big. I couldn't wait for it to drop. I was like, 'I'm going to get ya'll this time.'"

Rebounding with Naomi

Fresh from his breakup with Chilli, Usher is seen around town with supermodel Naomi Campbell (right). In October, Campbell, 34, throws a private bash for Usher's 26th birthday at New York City's Rainbow Room. But Usher's rep insists they're just friends, while Campbell's rep tells PEOPLE that "Naomi and Usher are having fun hanging out together."

Usher Lights Up Chicago

Usher makes his Broadway debut as Billy Flynn in the Tony-winning musical Chicago. "I have always admired Broadway actors for their showmanship, dedication and focus that goes into performing live on stage every night," Usher says in a statement. "Being on Broadway allows you to connect to audiences in a whole new way that's different from music and movies." His two-month stint ends with a case of strep throat in October.

Usher & Tameka Engaged

At the NAACP Theatre Awards, Usher, 28, wins a Spirit Award. But it's his acceptance speech that makes headlines as he refers to former stylist-turned-girlfriend Tameka Foster, 36, as his "fiancée." In June, Foster (right), who has three children from previous relationships, announces she's pregnant. "Tameka's given me one of the greatest gifts I'll ever have," Usher tells Essence. "With a child, now I have purpose. I understand love."

Rocky Road to the Altar

After canceling their July 28 Hamptons wedding, Usher and Foster tie the knot in the Atlanta office of Usher's lawyer. His mother, Jonetta Patton, is a no-show. On September 1, they have their dream wedding in Atlanta with 200 guests. Afterward, the couple appears on the cover of Essence, where they discuss the negative press surrounding their relationship. "[Getting married] and having a child is something that everyone should celebrate," Usher says. That November, the newlyweds welcomea son, Usher Raymond V.

Usher's Back With New Album

With "Love in This Club" reaching No. 1, Usher releases his new album, Here I Stand, where he chronicles the "journey of getting married." "Every word on this album is meaningful," he tells EW. Of his own marriage, he reflects, "I was reading very hurtful things about the person that I chose to love, and I felt like they were taking stabs at me or my choice." But the song's title track is also personal: "I'm saying, 'No matter where I'm at or what I'm doing, you're the person I'm with, so don't have any doubt about it. I stand here.'"

Baby Usher's Big Debut

Usher debuts his namesake 9-month-old son on the cover of Essence. "Now I represent what he is to become," Usher says of baby Usher. "He's gonna admire me, he's gonna look up to me. He's gonna say, 'I wanna be' – or he should say – 'I wanna be like my father. I wanna be a man of valor. I wanna possess what my father has as a man.'" In December, the R&B star and his wife welcome their second son, Naviyd Ely Raymond.

Usher files for divorce from his wife Tameka in Atlanta. "He's done his best to keep Tameka away," a source tells PEOPLE of the couple's separate lives. "Usher has not been staying at home with her much lately." They have two sons together, Usher Raymond V, 18 months, and Naviyd, 6 months.

Taking on a role that Diddy once played for him, Usher mentors and signs young YouTube sensation Justin Bieber – who goes on to release two hit albums. "There was an ultimate star quality about him," Usher tells PEOPLE. "I saw that he wanted it. It was the same fire I had. He was so talented, even more than I was at [that age]."

Usher returns to the top of the albums charts (bumping his protégé Justin Bieber's latest release to No. 2) with Raymond v. Raymond, a post-divorce effort that boasts hit singles, "OMG" and "There Goes My Baby". In August, he releases the follow-up Versus, which peaks at No. 4 on the strength of its lead single, "DJ Got Us Fallin' In Love".
